Gunn was born in Cleveland Ohio but moved at an early age and was raised in Santa Fe New Mexico the daughter of Sharon Anna Kathryn Shana Gunn an interior designer as well as Clemens Earl Gunn Jr. who was a real estate. Santa Fe Preparatory School, where she graduated in 1986. She was a theater student in the theater department at Northwestern University and graduated with a degree in 1990. In the fall of 1988, Gunn spent a semester abroad to study in the British American Drama Academy. She shared a home with Pamela Adlon after moving to Laurel Canyon Los Angeles. Gunn was known best for her role as Skyler in AMC's Breaking drama. In 2013, and 2014, she won the Primetime Emmy Award in Outstanding Supporting Female Actor in Drama Series. In August 2013 she composed an op-ed for The New York Times examining her public displeasure towards her persona.
